The First ‘Supergirl’ Trailer is Here and OH MY GOD!!!!!
Sami DeMonster shares her thoughts!
The first official Supergirl trailer is HERE! And it is everything! I am actively trying not to WRITE THIS ENTIRE REACTION IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM THAT EXCITED!
This version of Supergirl might be unfamiliar to fans who haven’t explored her story in the comic books. The stereotype of Kara Zor-El as a gender-bent version of Clark Kent, mild-mannered and well-behaved, is all wrong. Throw that idea out the window and embrace a rebellious and traumatized young woman who watched her entire planet die in front of her. Unlike Clark, she carries Krypton’s memories and culture with her.
Past live-action adaptations of Supergirl, while fantastic in their own ways, have not always been comic-accurate. The new movie is an adaptation of a specific comic book, and my personal favorite Supergirl story, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely and colors by Matheus Lopes.
Supergirl stars Milly Alcock as the titular character with Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, and is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueria. The movie is slated to come out on 6.26.2026.
The comic is an intergalactic journey that holds a mirror up to Kara’s loss and grief. The story starts off with Kara going off-world to a planet with a Red Sun so she can get drunk—ya know, because Yellow Suns give Kryptonians their powers and their bodies metabolize alcohol too fast.
In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Kara is celebrating her 21st birthday, though the teaser trailer reveals she is celebrating her 23rd birthday in this movie. I personally love it when stories explore a slightly older Kara. I think it works best for her character.
While off-planet, she meets a young alien girl named Ruthye who asks her for help avenging the death of her father. Kara begrudgingly agrees to help because she can’t let this kid get herself killed. What they’ll soon discover will shatter their very being as they witness mass murders spanning across multiple planets. This is a story that will break Kara down so she can build herself back up.
In the comic, while this story takes place in the modern day, we also do explore Kara’s dark origins through a series of flashbacks, and I’m going to wager that the movie will do the same.
And just like the source material, this is a Science Fiction movie though and through. Kara, at least in Woman of Tomorrow, talks about how, while growing up on Krypton, it was normal to travel to other planets. Unlike Clark, who is a true Earth boy, Kara is an intergalactic girl and is comfortable and familiar with space travel.
The visuals from this movie lean heavily into the action and sci-fi visuals, which I am beyond stoked for. DC movies in the past often focused on Earth stories, and DC Comics tells stories across the Galaxy!
In the trailer, we also get confirmation that everyone’s favorite Super-Pup will be in the movie! In the comic, Krypto is an important character in the story; he is Kara’s dog, after all. It looks like the movie might include more witty and humorous moments, which I think works for a film that will explore dark themes as the story progresses. It works well for this medium.
Of course, this movie adaptation will be different from the comic, and I always embrace the differences, as long as it captures the important core elements, which it looks like they will! I’m beyond excited to see Milly Alcock as Supergirl. This character, to me, is dark and edgy and messy, and it looks like Milly captures the essence of Kara Kor-El perfectly.
I’ve always felt Supergirl was a misunderstood character who was underutilized and misrepresented in live-action, so this new movie means a lot to me. Teenaged Sami who binged the trade paperback she got from the bookstore of Supergirl: The Girl of Steel is ecstatic!
If you want to know more about the character leading up to the movie, check out Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It is a haunting story that I think everyone should read at some point—it’s my favorite characterization of Supergirl!
Yes, I will be rewatching this trailer another 20 times, thanks for asking.

This looked cool but it didn't do a ton for me. I'll read the comic and then come back to the trailer. I've never read Woman of Tomorrow.
Aquaman as Lobo, nice.
