REVIEW: FLAVOR GIRLS No. 1 from BOOM! Studios

Flavor Girls by Loïc Locatelli-Kournwsky with colorist Eros de Santiago is an inspiring story about Sara, a young girl who is called upon to find the bravery within herself to protect the earth. This story is funny, witty, dark, and whimsical. Flavor Girls Number 1 dropped July 2022 and has set up so much to look forward to.

Aliens have been chilling on earth for twelve years. Nobody has been able to establish contact with them because… let’s just say they are not friendly. The Flavor girls are the Earth’s greatest defense. They are a three-piece team of magical earth guardians, the “superheroes” of this world. Naoko, Camille, and V are the Dragonfruit, Pomegranate, and Artichoke Flavor Girls.

Impressionable and booksmart, Sara aspires to make a difference in the world by becoming a peacemaker for the UN. In the midst of an alien attack, Sara is magically called upon to become the newest member of the Flavor Girls. Sara has to find bravery within herself, learn how to fight aliens, navigate her new powers, and be a part of this already established team. Sara has much to learn to become the hero the Earth needs her to be: a Flavor Girl.

This series has a lot to explore. The art is enchanting, the dialog is funny and witty, and there is so much setup for some fantastic character development. There are some dark elements in this story but it has a lot of heart. I can’t wait to see the Flavor Girls back in action.
