Criminal Minds: Evolution
The long-awaited return of Criminal Minds has begun, with three episodes of the new season now streaming.
The show’s reboot finds most of the cast returning from the end of season 15, which aired in early 2020. Although we miss out on the return of Simmons and Reid, fans get to dive deeper into our favourite returning characters’ personal lives. The first episode focuses on the private lives of Rossi and Garcia and introduces a new type of serial killer. We get to see both the personal and professional impact of a post-pandemic world on the BAU team. Episode two delves into JJ’s family and marriage more than we’ve seen in previous seasons. We also finally get to see a LGBT+ relationship in the main cast from episode two.
This season is already showing a grittier and more realistic feel of the personal impact of a career dedicated to catching serial killers. The updated stylistic choices for streaming work well, with the added bonus of unfiltered swearing furthering the realism of the new season. (The first time Rossi drops an F-bomb was just perfect!)
Season 16 is definitely one for the fans. There is already so much character development and the updated episode structure is less formulaic than prior seasons. The storyline feels more unpredictable which will keep us all on the edge of our seats.
It should be also noted that the new season does get very graphic in places so be aware of your own personal triggers. The themes aren’t glossed over as much as in previous seasons and the psychological violence is heightened.
Criminal Minds: Evolution is now streaming with Paramount+ and Disney+ (including in Australia!), with new episodes released every Friday. The first 15 seasons are also currently available from Disney+.
