The Biggest Night in Gaming: Our Favorite Announcements from The Game Awards 2022
The biggest night in gaming this year brought us a flurry of new reveals and hyped us up for the gaming industry's future. Here are the announcements that have us hyped the most:
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
We've seen a few trailers for the newest Suicide Squad game from Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady. However, this latest trailer thrilled The Game Awards' audience by confirming that Kevin Conroy will make one final posthumous appearance as Batman, reprising his role from the Arkham series for the first time since 2015. The action-packed trailer ended with a bittersweet note, "Thank you Kevin." After his sudden passing earlier this year, it's a joy to learn that we have not yet seen the last of Kevin. This will undoubtedly be one of the most looked-forward-to games of 2023.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
Indie developer Upstream Arcade is partnering with Dark Horse Comics and creator Mike Mignola to create an all-new experience for the legendary comic book character Hellboy. This new game boasts an incredible cell-shaded art style that makes every frame look like the panel from one of the classic Mignola comics. While the release date has yet to be revealed, we can't wait to see which dark corners of the Hellboy universe we'll get to explore when these demons come knocking.
Hades II
Supergiant Games, renowned for their innovative titles like Transistor and Bastion, revealed that their next title will be a sequel to the multiple award-winning Hades, the first-ever sequel for the studio. In an industry flooded with Rogue-likes, Hades stood apart for its fun characters and unique method of storytelling, not to mention thrilling gameplay. Its sequel promises to level up the experience for players, giving us a new protagonist in Melinoë, the immortal Princess of the Underworld, and sending us on a quest to slay the titan Chronos.
Earthblade
From Celeste developer Extremely OK Games, Ltd. comes brand a new platformer, Earthblade. In it you play as Névoa, an enigmatic child of Fate returning at long last to Earth. The exciting gameplay will be more combat- and exploration-focused than Celeste, but fans can expect Earthblade to retain Celeste’s charming pixel art-style mixed with hand-drawn character portraits. Besides Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight: Silksong, Earthblade promises to be one of the most highly anticipated platformers in the coming future.
Judas
Not much is known about Judas yet, but director Ken Levine's unique vision in developing first-person shooters is renowned in the gaming community. Gamers have been waiting for Irrational Games (now Ghost Story Games) to return to the scene since Bioshock Infinite in 2013, and it appears the wait is almost over. Given its setting in the final frontier, will this new intellectual property be Bioshock in space? Or can gamers look forward to a new experience entirely? Only time will tell.
Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
Fans of gaming are no stranger to crossovers, and Dead Cells developer Motion Twin have given us some of the most exciting crossovers to date. One year ago, the "Everyone is Here" update brought content from many games like Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, Hyper Light Drifter, Guacamelee, Skul, and Curse of the Dead Gods to the acclaimed platformer. At the Game Awards on Thursday night, developer Motion Twin unveiled that Dead Cells' latest crossover is none other than Castlevania. So, are you ready to take on Dracula one more time?
REPLACED
Self-described as a "2.5D sci-fi retro-futuristic action platformer", REPLACED is a visually unique voxel-style game set in an alternate 1980s America. According to the game’s description, you play as R.E.A.C.H. - an artificial intelligence trapped in a human body against its own will, striving to adjust to human life in and around Phoenix-City. With such an interesting premise and an unforgettable aesthetic, we'll be keeping a look out for this one in 2023
